News: King present at the opening of new Murcia airport
King Felipe VI will be present on 15 January when Corvera airport in Murcia is opened.
It is the new airport that will finally replace the old former military airport San Javier after many years. The Corvera airport starts with 3 airlines and 12 destinations, including Belgium.
Finally the time has come and the years of waiting for the new modern (and much too expensive) airport of Murcia is over. On 15 January the Aeropuerto Internacional Región de Murcia (AIRM) will be put into use and that will also be done well with the presence of the King of Spain.
With the new airport in Corvera, Murcia will become a direct competitor for the Alicante-Elche airport, especially with respect to British air passengers traveling to the coastal towns or the Manga del Mar Menor or Cartagena.
The airport manager is Aena who hopes to welcome at least 3.5 million passengers a year in the new installations. In the newspaper you can read that the airport is about 40% cheaper to fly which is interesting for airlines.
Connections
The Costa Cálida airport will mainly be connected to British and Irish airports such as London-Stansted, London-Luton, Manchester, East Midlands, Birmingham, Leeds-Bradford and Dublin via Ryanair.
EasyJet will connect the airport of Murcia with London-Gatwick, London-Southend and Bristol.
TUIfly will fly between Murcia and Brussels-Charleroi and Antwerp.
In addition to the aforementioned companies, other airlines have shown interest in flights to and from Murcia's new airport.
Vueling (to Barcelona), Norwegian (Scandinavian countries), Aerlingus (Ireland), Volotea (to Asturias) and Jet2 (destinations still unknown) also want to fly routes from the second half of 2019.
