News: The largest monument in honor of Columbus is on the Costa del Sol
Visitors and residents of the Costa del Sol may know what it is about but in the municipality of Benalmádena there is a unique tribute to the explorer Columbus, also known as the "Castillo de Colomares" or the Colomares Castle.
An imaginative whole that is definitely worth a visit.
Despite the name, the strange looking building is not really a castle but more a monument. The Castillo de Colomares is not very old and was built between 1987 and 1994 with the builder and author, the Catalan gynecologist. Esteban Martín Martín, needed seven years to complete it. The owner made use of the fact that in 1992 the 500-year commemoration of the discovery of America took place to build his monument.
Ultimately, Esteban Martín Martín, together with two local construction workers, took seven years to complete his life's work. On a plot of 1,500 m2 the three men built a monument in a building style with a combination of Byzanthijns, Romanesque, Gothic and Mudejar (Hispano-Arabich) elements.
Outside the monument in honor of the explorer is also an empty mausoleum where the last remains of Columbus should come to lie, something that has not happened to this day.
The Castillo de Colomares also has an entry in the Guinness Book of Records, not because of the Columbus monument but because of the smallest church in the world of only 1.96 m2.
On the video (Spanish) the son of the builder tells the story of the largest Columbus monument in the world. If you do not understand Spanish, the images are recorded with, among other things, a drone that is also nice enough to watch.
