Belgian owners of Spanish island near Formentera want to renovate houses
The Belgian brothers Christian and Jean Cigrang recently bought the Balearic island s'Espalmador off the coast of Formentera and they have now had the first meeting with the authorities.
During this meeting, the Belgian brothers and investors immediately made it clear that they are aware that this is a protected nature reserve.
In April it became known that the Belgian family Cigrang bought the Balearic island s'Espalmador via a Luxembourg company. Two of the three Cigrang brothers have paid 18 million euros for the piece of nature and have now indicated that they are consistent that they are not allowed to do anything with the island. That is to say, during a meeting with the authorities they indicated that they know that it is a protected nature area that they can not change anything and what they will respect.
After the purchase of the island, the authorities in Ibiza worried about the future of the natural paradise off the coast of Formentera but Christian and Jean have reassured the Consell. The only thing the brothers want to do is to restore and renovate the existing houses and respect the rules that apply to them.
The island s'Espalmador has an area of 137 m2 but the private area is 80 m2 because the beaches are owned by the Spanish coast authorities (Costas) and in Spain can never be privately owned.
On the island there are two dwellings a smaller one with four bedrooms and a large one with no less than 12 rooms. These two houses and a chapel will be adapted so that they can serve as a holiday home for the new owners. The rest of the island is left alone, according to the Cigrang brothers.
