News: Is Benidorm a bikefriendly city?
6 Feb 2019

During the Bike and Hiking Fair last weekend (February 2 and 3) in the Belgian city of Ghent, the coastal city of Benidorm presented itself as a "bikefriendly" city, or a bicycle-friendly city.

Now we are not so well known in the editors in Benidorm and so we ask that question to the residents and regular visitors to Benidorm and the surrounding area. Is Benidorm really as friendly as they say or is that not so easy?

Just like last year during this Belgian fair for cycling and walking tourists, the tourist department of the coastal city of Benidorm has had a stand to promote bicycle tourism in and around Benidorm. Benidorm sees itself as a bicycle-friendly city because there are many cycle paths, separate bicycle sheds, a public bicycle rental system and several hotels are ready for cycling tourists who use Benidorm and surroundings to train.

But is Benidorm as "bikefriendly" as they want to be? Since the editors do not know Benidorm very well, we ask the help of the readers who are familiar with Benidorm and also with cycling in and around Benidorm.

Bike paths

This year, Benidorm wants to build more kilometers of cycle paths, so that almost every part of the popular coastal town can be reached by bicycle. The bike paths go from one side of the resort to the other and there are also links to other nearby seaside resorts such as Alfaz del Pi and Villajoyosa. If it is up to the municipality, there will only be more cycle paths in the future.

Public rental system

Benidorm has been using the now popular bicycle rental service BiciDorm for a number of years, a form of public transport but then on the rental / rental bike. With this system you can use the multiple bicycle sheds in the city where bicycles can be taken for a certain amount and can be left at another bicycle shed. That system has now been introduced in practically the whole of Spain, but in most cases this is only for the inhabitants of a city. In the case of Benidorm everyone can use the bikes.

During the first years there were 200 bicycles, but that number has now risen to 400 bicycles or more. Prices range from 5 euros per day to 33 euros per year and you can register for the service on this website.

Cyclists

Benidorm is also popular with amateur and professional cyclists who use the mild winters to prepare themselves for the new cycling season or simply enjoy the surroundings and the many cycling opportunities. On this page you can see various routes that have been placed on Wikiloc by amateurs and are recommended.

Hotels

To promote bicycle tourism, there are several hotels that call themselves "Bikefriendly". This website includes Bike Friendly Hotel RH Victoria, La Estacion Hotel, Marconfort Essence, Melia Villaitana, Hotel Helios, Grand Luxor Hotels and RH Royal.

These hotels usually have special areas where guests can store bicycles, something that larger groups of cyclists like to use. There will undoubtedly be more hotels in Benidorm and surroundings that are bike friendly enough.
