Skiing four hours from Alicante!

Skiing four hours from Alicante!

The heavy rainfall and drop in temperatures in recent days has ensured that the highest point of the Sierra de las Nieves in the province of Málaga is covered with the first layer of snow this fall / winter 2020/2021. The 1,919 (or 2,075) meter high peak of the Torrecilla mountain is again colored white for the first time this winter.

Torrecilla or La Torrecilla is located in the municipality of Tolox and at 1,919 (or 2,075) meters above sea level, it is the highest peak of the Sierra de las Nieves and one of the most important mountains in the province of Malaga.

Due to the rainfall and the drop in temperatures, the first snow can be seen on the high mountain top. It is true that it is not a thick layer of snow and it cannot be compared with the snow that was seen later in winter and in other years, but it is always nice to be able to see white mountain peaks from the coast.

The temperature on the peak and access routes is usually mild (not extreme) all year round. In summer the Andalusian heat of the Mediterranean climate is noticeable while in winter the temperature drops significantly, although this is not considered extremely cold.

In the fall / winter it is easy to find snow on the Torrecilla mountain but it usually melts within a few days unless the temperature stays very low.

Highest point?

There has been a discussion for years about what exactly is the highest point in the province of Málaga, the La Maroma in the Sierra de Tejeda with 2,069 meters or the La Torrecilla in the Sierra de las Nieves with 1,919 meters.

New measurements from the Universidad de Málaga in 2018 showed that the Torrecilla is 156 meters higher and would therefore be 2,075 meters high, making it the highest point in the province of Málaga.
